May 15, 2025

To commemorate International Thalassemia Day, the Punjab Thalassemia and Other Genetic Disorders Prevention & Research Institute (PTGD) at Fatima Jinnah Medical University (FJMU) hosted an engaging seminar to raise awareness about thalassemia, its impact on society, and the critical importance of early diagnosis and prevention.

FJMU Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Khalid Masood Gondal, Principal Prof. Dr. Noreen Akmal, PTGD Director General Dr. Yasmeen Ahsan and PITB Director (IT Operations) Nausheen Fayyaz participated in the seminar. The participants emphasized the need for collective action against genetic disorders.

During the session, PITB was commended for its pivotal role in developing the Thalassemia Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and the Thalassemia Prevention System—key digital solutions that have streamlined diagnosis, treatment, and reporting processes across Punjab.

Participants also discussed future strategies, including the establishment of additional laboratories to expand screening and research capacity throughout the province.
